Chevy had it in 66 too:
First 66 Chevelles were being produced in September of 65. I'm sure they didn't just whip up the design and retool in a few months.

No, but Dick Teague didn't just pen the AMC a few months before they built the concept, either.

Still, I would bet it's a lot quicker for a car company to make a one-off that isn't subject to the same testing and regulations as a full production car that includes sedan/hardtop, 2 door, 4 door, wagon, convertible, and ute variants, plus all the different trim options. Maybe an analogy would be cooking a meal for yourself vs opening a restaurant to cook for others. Unless things were way different back then...
